About Us
Located in Alice Springs at the core of the Red Centre, which has long been the epicentre of Australia’s national consciousness, Red Dust Theatre is a groundbreaking company, made unique by its rich social and cultural milieu, its remote desert location, and by the diverse skills of the artists it attracts. Red Dust Theatre strives to be accessible and inclusive of all peoples and to produce quality theatrical performances.
Since its inception in 2001 Red Dust Theatre has grown from a local project driven and funded enterprise to become an incorporated organisation annually funded by the Northern Territory Government and in receipt of national project funding and corporate sponsorship, with an acclaimed reputation for producing high quality and innovative professional theatre.
Red Dust Theatre has a strong focus on cross cultural collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, recognising the power of theatre to facilitate opportunities for our cultures to learn from each other, share our stories with each other and walk into the future as united Australians.
Red Dust Theatre has produced 8 original works to date, including Traindancing, written by nationally acclaimed writer Michael Watts and performed at the Adelaide International Festival, Birds in a Cage, written by Danielle Loy and awarded a Peoples Choice Award at the Sydney Short and Sweet Festival, the smash hit comical drama, Barracking! and Central Australia’s first Indigenous musical, The Magic Coolamon. Red Dust Theatre is also committed to developing the Central Australian performing arts industry through the provision of skills development opportunities, including workshops and master classes.
Red Dust Theatre is committed to fostering theatre that expresses unique stories with a Central Australian flavour and voice and sharing this initially with the rest of Australia and ultimately with the world. We will continue to foster our focus on cross-cultural issues pertinent to the unique environment of Central Australia. Through its history of producing new works of this nature, Red Dust Theatre has strived to reflect and enhance the cultural and creative aspirations of the Central Australian community and thereby positively contribute to cross cultural relations throughout Australia.
